Indiana Civil War [graphic] : carte de visite portraits, ca. 1861-1865.

The collection contains a large selection of carte de visite portraits of Indiana Civil War soldiers. The photographs have been collected by the Indiana Historical Society Library over a span of several years.They are for the most part Indiana soldiers who were photographed by a variety of photographers and in various locations around the country. Most of the individuals are identified, some appear to be autographed by the soldiers, other's names have been added at a later time by unknown individuals. The portraits are grouped by regiment then arranged alphabetically by company letter.

William F. Allee was born in Hendricks County, Ind., in 1844. He enlisted as a private in the 22nd Indiana Infantry Regiment, Company K, in 1861. Allee participated in every regimental engagement and was promoted to the rank of captain in 1865. After the war he married Eliza Merrill Parker and the couple raised four children. The 29th Indiana Infantry Regiment was organized in LaPorte, Indiana in 1861. It left the state in October of that year and moved south and saw action in Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia. The regiment was mustered out 2 December 1865. The purpose of reunion associations is to promote reunions, renew friendships, and perpetuate the memory and history of United States military units. The 49th Indiana Volunteer Regiment served the Union during the Civil War. Though some Indianas supported the South and the Confederate cause, the State stayed with the Union.
